Oxford Gliding Club - Joining Instructions

We look forward to welcoming your group to the Oxford Gliding Club. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, please follow these essential guidelines.

1. Arrival & Mandatory Briefing

Arrival Window: Please arrive between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM.

The Briefing: It is vital that your entire group is present by 5:30 PM for a mandatory safety briefing and a coordinated transfer to the launch area.

Contact on Arrival: You will be greeted by a club member at the main gate. We are based at RAF Weston on the Green. If you cannot find anyone, please call 01865 521042.

Travel Note: Traffic on the nearby A34 is often heavy at this time on a Friday; please allow plenty of extra traveling time to ensure you don’t miss the briefing.

2. Pre-Arrival Registration (Action Required)

If you are scheduled to fly, you must complete the temporary membership form before you arrive at the airfield. This ensures you are covered by club insurance and saves significant time on the night.

3. Safety & Airfield Conduct

Visitor Barriers: Once at the launch point, you must remain within the designated visitor barriers.

Escorts: Never attempt to cross the airfield or landing areas without a formal escort from a club member.

Alcohol Policy: For safety reasons, the legal blood alcohol limit for gliding is one-quarter of the driving limit. A single drink will put you over the limit. Do not consume any alcohol before your flight.

4. Pilot Requirements & Weight

For safety and glider balance, instructors need accurate information. Please ensure you know your current weight in pounds on the night.

Maximum Weight: 16 stone (224 lbs / 101kg).

Maximum Height: 6’3” (1.9m), depending on torso/leg length.

Minimum Height: 4’7” (1.4m).

If you are close to these limits, please contact us for advice prior to your visit.

5. What to Wear

Clothing: Comfortable layers are best. It can get chilly on the airfield in the evening, even in summer, so bring a fleece or windproof jacket.

Footwear: Please wear flat shoes suitable for standing on a grass airfield. No heels or flip-flops.

6. Pricing & The BBQ

Temporary Membership & First Flight: £45 (Includes one trial lesson; you may take the controls once at height).

Second Flight: £20 (Subject to daylight and instructor availability).

Post-Flight BBQ: £12.50 per person. Includes a range of meats, cold food, and salads.
